John I. Straub, 74, Penns Creek

— PENNS CREEK — John I. Straub, life-long resident of Penn’s Creek, slept the sleep of death, and entered into the presence of His Lord Jesus Christ, on the afternoon of Oct. 23, 2013.

John was born Aug. 26, 1939, in Swengel, to his cherished father Rev. George I. Straub, 48-year superintendent of God’s Missionary Church, and mother Mary E. (Dressler) Straub.

He graduated from Middleburg High School, after which he worked as a self-employed contractor. John was a passionate and meticulous craftsman who often reflected with quiet satisfaction that his work would stand the test of time, and, as he once noted, “far outlive him.”

While he enjoyed building, his paramount pride and interest was in the family which he built and nurtured. On Sept. 1, 1963, he married Carolyn Jacobs, his faithful wife and dearest friend. John and Carolyn had two beloved daughters, Vicki Renee, wife of David Rochester, of Seneca, S.C., and Heidi Lorraine, wife of Nathan Arnold, of Lebanon, Pa. His only grandchild, Johnathan S. Arnold, was born to Heidi and Nathan on March 23, 1995, and is currently studying for the ministry in his memory.

From a child he was an avid hunter on Jack’s Mountain. God answered his prayer as a young man to purchase the property adjacent to the mountain, overlooking the village of Penn’s Creek, and there he carefully and lovingly constructed the home at 180 Memory Lane, in which he lived until his passing.

John always blessed God for his wife Carolyn, with whom he celebrated his 50th wedding anniversary shortly before his passing. He was a loving father to both his girls, who depended on him for guidance and support, and was a source of inspiration to his aspiring grandson. Above all, he was the spiritual backbone of his family, leaving a testimony of strength, care, and integrity in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. He was an avid reader and student of the Bible, cherishing Divine knowledge and wisdom. He especially loved Bible prophecy and the Scripture according to Isaiah. His family is forever indebted to his active intercession during long, sleepless nights in prayer.

John was known for his impeccable Christian character. He balanced his firm convictions with tenderness and care, while his familiar humor and clever wit was without contradiction to his serious and visionary thinking. He was a loving son, husband, father, grandfather, friend, and child of the King. “We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord.” (2 Corinthians 5:8)

The family will receive visitors from noon to 2 p.m. Monday at the Mountain Road God’s Missionary Church, Penns Creek, where the funeral will follow at 2 p.m. with Pastor Bradley S. Dixon officiating.

Burial will be in the Mountain View Cemetery, Penns Creek.

Arrangement are by the Hummel Funeral Home, 574 Hill St., Middleburg.
