DORNSIFE — Garvin C. Schaffer, 74, of Dornsife, passed away on Wednesday, March 27, 2013, at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville.
He was born Feb. 3, 1939, in Mifflin Township, Dauphin County, a son of the late John M. and Eva M. (Shade) Schaffer. On March 30, 1963, he married the former Ruth E.A. Troutman, who survives.
Garvin was a 1957 graduate of Upper Dauphin High School and was a lifelong dairy farmer.
He was member of Paxton Bible Church and in his younger years was a member of the FFA and active in 4-H. He received the Keystone Farmer Degree. In the past, he served as a director of the Atlantic Dairy Co-Op. He was a member of the Gratz Fair Board and the National and Pennsylvania Holstein Associations.
Garvin enjoyed Penn State football and considered farming not only an occupation but a hobby as well.
In addition to his wife of 50 years, he is survived by two children, Wendy J.E. Schaffer, of Sunbury, and Garvin C. “Butch” Schaffer II, of Dornsife; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Robert J. and Doris Schaffer, of Elizabethville, and Walter A. and Cindy Schaffer, of Lykens; three sisters and brothers-in-law, twins, Mary J. and Larry Gessner, of Berrysburg, and Martha E. and William Koppenhaver, of Harrisburg, and Linda L. Schaffer and companion, Tibor, of Millersburg; and nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews.
A visitation will be held from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, “The Hill Church,” 215 St. John Road, Elizabethville, followed by the funeral at 11 with Pastor Dan Lepley officiating.
Interment will follow in St. John’s Cemetery.
