ELYSBURG — Daniel Thomas Shimko, 93, of 312 E. Center St., passed away on Tuesday, Aug. 27, 2013, at his home.
He was born Oct. 5, 1919, at home in Kulpmont, a son of the late Stephen and Anna Shimko and the youngest of 11 children, all now deceased. In July 1943, he married the former Cecilia Cichanowicz, who preceded him in death in February 2001.
Dan graduated from Kulpmont High School with the Class of 1938.
He joined his brothers, George, Michael and Francis, in the operation of Shimko’s Dairy in Strong. He also was a partner in the operation of local dress factories, LenJeff Inc., Mount Carmel and Kulpmont, and Hillside Sportswear, Shamokin.
He belonged to the Kulpmont Lions Club and the Fish and Game Club, Elysburg.
Dan was an avid bowler and golfer.
He is survived by one son, Daniel Steven, of Elysburg; two daughters, Cecile Yvonne, wife of Al Ryland, of Hampton, N.J., and Elaine Marie Shimko, of Elysburg; two grandchildren, Daniel Alex, of Washington, D.C., and Dana Marie, of Oviedo, Fla.; one sister-in-law, Chet Purcell, of Shamokin; and many nieces and nephews.
A viewing will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. today and 9 to 10 a.m. Friday, followed by the funeral at 10, in the C.J. Lucas Funeral Home Inc., 1053 Chestnut St., Kulpmont, with Elwood Maneval officiating.
Burial will be in Mount Carmel Cemetery, Mount Carmel Township.
In lieu of flowers, Dan had requested donations to the Christian Broadcasting Network, 977 Centerville Turnpike, Virginia Beach, VA 23463, or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
