LEWISBURG — Mary Aunkst DeWald, 93, of Buffalo Valley Lutheran Village, Lewisburg, passed away on Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2013.
She was born April 25, 1920, in Allenwood, a daughter of the late George Boyd and Mabel (Waldron) Aunkst.
Mary was a 1938 graduate of Watsontown High School. While in her 50s she received her bachelor’s degree from Penn State and her master’s degree from Seton Hall. Her lifelong commitment to learning carried on into her 80s as she took classes at Bucknell to learn new skills.
Mary was a member of the Trinity United Church of Christ, Watsontown.
She devoted her life to her children, granddaughter and to helping other people. Mary enjoyed being social and volunteering with different groups and organizations. She was a very outspoken senior citizen advocate and was appointed to several state committees in Harrisburg. Mary loved to draw and was an award winning published poet.
Surviving are three children, Wilson DeWald, of Philadelphia, Nell DeWald Luttrell, of Harrisburg, and Larry DeWald and his wife, Jean, of Elkton, Md.; one granddaughter, Margaret Luttrell Outsios and her husband, Georgios; and one great-granddaughter, Christina.
She was predeceased by two brothers and one sister.
Services will be held privately at the convenience of the family in Watsontown Cemetery.
