Thelma (Woodmansee) Latour, 89, Springfield, Mass.

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — Thelma (Woodmansee) Latour, 89, passed away on Tuesday, April 30, 2013.

She was born Feb. 3, 1924, in Upper Jay, N.Y., the daughter of the late Rev. C. M. and Bertha (Hayes) Woodmansee.

Thelma graduated from high school in Bennington, Vt., and from Methodist Hospital School of Nursing in Brooklyn, N.Y. She became head nurse in pediatrics at Methodist Hospital in Brooklyn. She attended Russell Sage College and Duke University for nursing administration and nursing education and worked as a staff nurse in pediatrics at Duke University Medical Center before becoming head nurse and a pediatric nursing instructor at Albany Medical Center, Albany, N.Y.

After marrying and raising her family, she became charge nurse and in-service coordinator at the United Methodist Homes in Lewisburg, Pa. Thelma worked as the assistant director of social services at Lewisburg’s Evangelical Community Hospital until her retirement in 1984.

Thelma (“Woodie” to many friends) was predeceased by her loving husband of 59 years, Robert A. Latour Sr., in 2010. They met and married in Albany and moved to Lewisburg, where Bob was the swimming coach and later athletic director at Bucknell University. After retirement, they moved to Wilbraham, Mass., where Thelma was an active member of the Wilbraham United Church. She served as a deacon and for many years on the Called to Care Committee.

She loved her family, reading, writing, hiking and travel. She was proud of her Mayflower ancestry and of her grandfather, James Woodmansee, called “The Ohio Poet.”

She will be sadly missed by her daughter, Carol Piel and son-in-law, Alfred, of Wilbraham; her son, Robert Latour Jr. and daughter-in-law, Pam, of Clemson, S.C.; five grandchildren, Nathaniel, Adam and Michael Piel, Jessica Stack and her husband, Banning, and Rebekah Latour; nephews, Dennis and Ken Woodmansee, Bruce and Allen Latour and their families; and nieces, Sally Lippincott and Leslie Lee and families.

She was predeceased by her brother, Philip Woodmansee.

Visiting hours will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Monday at the Wilbraham Funeral Home, 2551 Boston Road, Wilbraham. Family and friends may meet for Thelma’s funeral at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Wilbraham United Church. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Reeds Landing.

Burial will be in Woodland Dell Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Wilbraham United Church, 500 Main St., Wilbraham, MA 01095.
