— MIDDLEBURG — Raymond E. Mattern, 80, of 39 Ebony Lane, passed away unexpectedly at 9:26 p.m. Friday, May 10, 2013, at his home.

He was born June 15, 1932, in Benfer, a son of the late Malvin M. and Katie A. (Gift) Mattern. On July 1, 1956, he married the former Nancy J. Wert who survives.

Raymond was a veteran of the Korean War serving in the Army.

His employment history included Will & Wagner Garage, McClure, Kinney Shoe Corp., Beaver Springs, the Paxton Brick Company, Paxtonville, Poloron Homes, Middleburg, and retired in 1977 from Wood Mode, Kreamer after 23 years of service.

He was a member of Grace Reformed Church, Troxelville, the Beaver Springs American Legion Post, the Kreamer Volunteer Fire Company, and the Reliance Hose Company Ambulance League.

One of the greatest pleasures in Raymond’s life was hunting.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons and one daughter-in-law, Timothy L. Mattern and Jeffery E. and Cindy Mattern, all of Middleburg; two grandsons and their spouses, Seth and Kristine Mattern, of McAlisterville and Craig and Bridget Mattern, of Middleburg; three great-grandchildren, Logan, Emma and Stevie Mattern; one sister, Janet L. Bachman, of Beaver Springs; and four brothers, Bob B. Mattern, of Buffalo Valley Lutheran Village, Malvin M. Mattern Jr., of McClure, Clark E. Mattern, of Beavertown, and Richard G. Mattern, of Beaver Springs.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Charles, Paul and Floyd Mattern, and six sisters, Eva Mattern, Helen Walter, Lulu Heimbach, Arla Hassinger, Rita Bailey, and Mary Mattern.

Friends and family will be received from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Hummel Funeral Home, 574 Hill St., Middleburg. The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday in Grace Reformed Church, Troxelville, with the Rev. Daniel Robatin officiating.

Burial with military honors by the Middle West Veterans Organization will be in Troxelville Union Cemetery.
