John M. “Jack” Zaktansky, 70, Watsontown

WATSONTOWN — John Michael “Jack” Zaktansky, 70, of 9965 Route 44, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2013, at Evangelical Community Hospital, Lewisburg.

He was born May 8, 1942, in Perth Amboy, N.J., the son of John and Mary Ann (Aleskie) Zaktansky. He was married for 36 years to Debra D. (Werner) Zaktansky, who survives.

John was a 1960 graduate of Perth Amboy High School.

John was employed as an ironworker with Local 373 in Perth Amboy for 34 years before retiring after he and his family moved to a small farm outside McEwensville. He also worked as a night watchman for Bryfogle’s greenhouses near Washingtonville and at Allen’s True Value, near Watsontown.

John, his wife and two sons, John A. and James, raised a variety of animals for more than two decades on their small family farm, including horses, cows, pigs, turkeys, chickens and various game birds. The family ran a small hunting preserve on the property and enjoyed working together to provide successful pheasant and quail hunting experiences for people from as far away as Canada.

John had a passion for raising and training Springer and Brittany hunting dogs, building a reputation for quality bloodlines and participating with his family in a variety of local field trial competitions. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, enjoying all outdoor sports and especially sharing that passion with his two sons and his grandchildren.

He enjoyed watching his sons play football and participate in Boy Scouts and was proud as they each went on to earn the Eagle Scout award. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, watching them in church and school performances, play soccer, ride horses and other activities.

John enjoyed boxing and watching boxing-based movies such as the Rocky films, inspired by his father, who was a Golden Glove boxing champion in 1933.

John is survived by two sons and their wives, John A. and Michelle Zaktansky, of Middleburg, and James and Rebecca Zaktansky, of Watsontown; one sister and her husband, Mary Ann and Alfred Bianchi, of Avenel, N.J.; five grandchildren, Paige, Peito and Samantha Zaktansky, of Middleburg, and Allison and Katherine Zaktansky, of Watsontown; and two nephews, Alfred and Christopher Bianchi, of Avenel, N.J.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday in Christ Wesleyan Church, 363 Stamm Road, Milton, with the Rev. Bud Rutherford officiating.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in John’s memory may be made to Christ Wesleyan Church or to the CAMO Outdoorsman Expo via Port Ann Wesleyan Church, 2856 Troxelville Road, Middleburg, PA 17842.

Funeral arrangements were made by the William F. Brooks Funeral Home, 207 Broadway St., Turbotville. An online guestbook can be found at wfbrooksfuneralhome.com.
