W. Palmer Long, 67, Liverpool

LIVERPOOL — William Palmer Long, 67, of Liverpool, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Saturday, June 5, 2010, at the Fox Chase Cancer Center, Philadelphia.

Palmer was born Dec. 20, 1942, on the family farm in Liverpool Township, Perry County, a son of the late William C. and Susan M. (Lyter) Long. On May 25, 1968, he married the former Joan Summy, of Millerstown, who survives his passing, ending a loving marriage of 43 years.

Palmer graduated from Greenwood High School in 1960 and later earned a degree in sociology from Harrisburg Area Community College.

He joined the Army after high school, serving in the intelligence service in Turkey. Returning home, he worked for Bell Telephone of Pennsylvania, taking early retirement from Bell Atlantic in 1991 as a transmission engineer after 27 years of service.

He was a member of Chapman Community Chapel, Port Trevorton, and the Bell Telephone Pioneers.

With a heart for the persecuted church under communism, Palmer then worked full time in missions, founding Keys Ministries with a vision to channel resources to train national Christian leaders throughout Central Asia and in Eastern Europe. Nationals then train nationals in areas of the world where Americans now have difficulty going. The Lord had enabled Keys in partnership with the College of Theology and Education in Moldova since 1998 to train more than 1,000 graduates in theology, missions, social studies and education and to establish three extension Bible schools for strengthening the church in republics of the former Soviet Union to the praise and glory of God.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by seven brothers and sisters, Julia Koller, Blanche Wallis and husband Robert, all of Liverpool, Mildred Murphy and husband Dale, of Palmyra, Isabelle Cameron and husband Harold, of Huntingdon, Truman E. Long and wife Jo, of Hummelstown, Carol Wilfong and husband David, of Marysville, and Susan Hoff and husband Michael, of Liverpool; and three generations of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Margaret Smeltzer, and one brother, Roy C. Long.

A private funeral will be held for the family with Pastor Kevin Rathmell at Chapman Community Chapel, 94 Silver Creek Road, Port Trevorton. A visitation for family and friends will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. Friday, followed by a memorial service at 7, at Richfield Mennonite Church, 167 Church St., Richfield, with Pastor Kevin Rathmell, Pastor Paul Beech III, Pastor Robert T. Gray Jr., Pastor John Briggs and Dr. Robert Miller officiating.

A private committal service for family will be held in St. John (Barner's) Lutheran Church Cemetery, Liverpool.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made in loving memory of Palmer to Keys Ministries, 381 Barner's Church Road, Liverpool, PA 17045.

The George P. Garman Funeral Homes Inc., 606 N. Front St., Liverpool, has been entrusted with the arrangements.
