DALMATIA — Melvin D. Smeltz, 83, of Dalmatia, passed away Monday, July 1, 2013, at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville.
Born on April 16, 1930, in Dalmatia, he was a son of the late Wilson and Tillie (Goodman) Smeltz. Melvin was married on Feb. 14, 1954, in Zion Stone Valley Church, Hickory Corners, to the former Virginia E. Wynn, who preceded him in death on Jan. 9, 2008.
He was a lifetime resident of Dalmatia.
Melvin was a 1948 graduate of Lower Mahanoy High School.
He served in the Army during the Korean War.
He previously worked at the former Muskin Shoe Factory.
Melvin and his late wife, Virginia, founded and operated the Country Kitchen Restaurant for 23 years in RR Herndon.
He was a member of Zion Stone Valley Church, Hickory Corners, and was a former deacon.
He was a member of the Hickory Corners Fire Company.
Surviving are one daughter and son-in-law, Debra and Sam Leitzel, of Dalmatia; one son, Rodney Smeltz, of Harding; two grandchildren, Travis and Kira Leitzel; two sisters-in-law and spouses, Carol Jean and Eugene Witmer, of Dalmatia, and Leona and Robert Shaffer, of Elizabethville; three nieces; and four nephews.
He was preceded in death by four sisters, Grace Zerbe, Gertrude Peifer, Pauline Coleman and Mildred Boyer, and one brother, Herlan Smeltz.
Visitors may call from 10 to noon Saturday at Zion Stone Valley Church, Mountain Road, Dalmatia, followed by the funeral at noon with the Rev. Curtis Zemencik officiating.
Burial will follow in Zion Stone Valley Church Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Melvin’s memory to the Zion Stone Valley Church Memorial Fund, 1899 Mountain Road, Dalmatia PA 17017.
Funeral arrangements are by the Robert G. Foust Jr. Funeral Home, 841 W. Shamokin St., Trevorton.
