LEWISBURG — Dale H. Harpster, 92, of 1224 W. Market St., passed away unexpectedly on Monday, July 8, 2013, at his home.
He was born Jan. 22, 1921, in Milton, a son of the late Warren M. and Clara L. (Young) Harpster. He and his wife of 64 years, the former Dorothy J. Wagner, were married in 1943. She preceded him in death on Dec. 28, 2007.
Dale attended the Milton School District. He joined the Army and landed on Utah Beach on D-Day. Dale served during World War II as an AA Artillery Weapons crewman, fighting in Normandy, northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe.
He was the founder, owner and operator of Dor-Day’s Sub Shop. Dale started his business in Shamokin Dam in 1968. He eventually opened his sub shop in Lewisburg and retired in 2008.
Dale was a member of Christ’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, Lewisburg, and a member of Kratzer-Dull American Legion Post 182, Lewisburg.
Dale enjoyed gardening, playing bingo and the lottery and watching TV, especially the military and animal channels.
Surviving are three sons and daughters-in-law, Skip and Ann Harpster, of Lewisburg, Robert and Linda Harpster, of Enola, and Walter and Judy Harpster, of Winfield; six grandchildren, Shannon, Tracy, Dan, Jason, Chad and Sara; and 11 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one son, Steven Harpster; two sisters, Grace Harpster and Mae Harpster; and one brother, Jake Harpster.
Friends will be received from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday at Cronrath-Grenoble Funeral Home, South Second and St. Louis streets, Lewisburg, where the funeral will be held at 11 with his pastor, the Rev. William S. Henderson, officiating.
Burial will follow in Lewisburg Cemetery.
The family will provide the flowers and suggests contributions in Dale’s memory be made to Christ’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, 100 S. Third St., Lewisburg, PA 17837.
