ELYSBURG — Simon L. Miller Jr., 82, of 108 Sunset Drive, was welcomed into glory and into the arms of his loving savior on Sunday, April 14, 2013.

He was born March 7, 1931, in Milton, a son of the late S. Lorenzo Sr. and Florence E. (Boudman) Miller. He was married for 57 years to the love of his life, June L. Miller, who preceded him in death on Oct. 10, 2011. They were married on Feb. 27, 1954.

He graduated in 1948 from Milton High School, where he was a multisport athlete in football, basketball and baseball. He played semi-pro basketball for the Locust Gap Apollos around 1949 to 1952. He attended Washington and Lee University.

Mr. Miller served from 1952 to 1968 in the Army, where he attained the rank of major, was in the infantry and was the chief of the Flight Examiner Branch at Hunter Army Airfield in Georgia. He served multiple tours in Vietnam. He then attended the Louisville Presbyterian Seminary in Kentucky from 1968 to 1970, earning his master of divinity degree.

From 1980 to 1991, he was commander of the Indiantown Gap Flight Facility, where he achieved the rank of lieutenant colonel. Mr. Miller was involved with real estate in the Elysburg area. He also was the speaker at numerous public speaking engagements.

He was an avid golfer and won the senior championship at Jepko’s Three Ponds, now Knoebels. He also played Augusta National after winning second place in the Southeastern Amateur. Mr. Miller loved to write and authored the book, “Once Upon A Time.”

He led his life with a purpose to bring glory to God, to love his family and to achieve as much as he could with the time the Lord gave to him. He was well known for his impressive handshake and fine patriotism to the country he loved and served.
