David B. Conz, 39, Tempe, Ariz.

— TEMPE, Ariz. — David “Dave” Bruce Conz, 39, of Tempe, Ariz., formerly of Sunbury, Pa., died Friday, April 12, 2013.

Born in Phoenixville, Pa., he was a son of the late Rev. Dr. John G. Conz and Lucinda “Cindy” A. (Lohman) Conz Spang.

David was a 1991 graduate of Shikellamy High School. During his senior year, he earned his Eagle Scout Award, the highest award in Scouting. That same year, he won the Pennsylvania State Forensics Championship in radio announcing.

David earned a B.S. in aerospace studies, as well as a pilot’s license with a multi-engine rating in May 1995 from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona, Fla. From Arizona State University, he earned an M.A. in interdisciplinary humanities in May 1999 and a PhD. in sociology in May 2006.

David worked as a lecturer in the interdisciplinary studies degree program in the School of Letters and Sciences, ans as an assistant research professor for The Consortium for Science, Policy, and Outcomes and The Center for Nanotechnology in Society at Arizona State University. His most popular course was his own creation a senior capstone course called “The Cultural and Chemical History of Beer.”

His academic interests included science, technology, and society; amateur scientific collaboration; science policy; social network analysis; creation science/equaltime; and digital panopticon/privatized surveillance.

In addition to academia, he enjoyed the do-it-yourself industry, especially homebrewing and creatin biodiesel fuel; motocycles and teaching motorcycle safety; dancing; playing the drums; and raising chickens.

David is survived by his mother, Cindy, of Dornsife; one uncle, Bruce Lohman, of Los Angeles; one sister and brother-in-law, Christine (Conz) Thomas Moll; one nephew, Jonas Moll; one niece, Cora Moll, all of Trumbauersville; and one great-uncle, Ernest Lohman, of Mount Bethel.

Friends may call from 9:30 a.m. to 10:50 a.m. Saturday, April 27, at Zion Lutheran Church Apple Chapel, followed by funeral and memorial service at 11 with the Rev. Richard Fangmann officiating.

Burial will be in Himmel’s Church Cemetery.
