Michael J. Haile Jr., 28, Northumberland

NORTHUMBERLAND — Michael J. Haile Jr., 28, of Harrisburg, formerly of Northumberland, passed away suddenly Tuesday, June 18, 2013, at his home.

A loving son and brother, he was born Feb. 28, 1985, in Danville, a son of Michael J. Haile Sr., of Sunbury, and Jane (Kiewlak) Haile, of Lewisburg, and brother to Sara Haile, who he adored.

A National Honor Society student, Michael graduated from Shikellamy High School in 2003. Always ambitious and eager to explore, Michael participated in many sports including baseball, basketball, track, football and his favorite, soccer.

He was a gifted musician who began playing the piano at age 8 and quickly became a self-taught guitarist shortly thereafter. He also played the saxophone and performed at church and social functions. He especially loved blues music, Phish and the Dave Matthews Band.

He loved mountain biking, hiking, camping and rafting. Michael delighted in designing and building a hovercraft and treboucher with his friends. He acquired many carpentry skills while working with his uncle Christopher Allen during summer breaks. He also worked for Pen Dot during summer college breaks, and during the winter as a ski instructor at Jack Frost.

Always a wonderful son, he and his sister would perform shows at home for their parents. He loved spending time with his family and extended family, especially his cousins, traveling to visit them and the annual trip to the Outer Banks. Always an animal lover, he enjoyed spending time with his dogs, Spuds and Mandy.

Michael graduated in 2010 from Bucknell University with degrees in mechanical engineering and Spanish. A man of peace, he participated in Habitat for Humanity while at Bucknell, traveling to Hawaii for a work trip.

His career as a mechanical project engineer began with Alpha Laval near Harrisburg. He traveled extensively to London, France and China with his job.

A former member of St. Monica parish, Michael served as an altar boy during his years in elementary school.

He is survived by his parents, Michael J. Haile Sr. and his wife Ruth, of Sunbury, and his mother, Jane Haile, of Lewisburg; his sister, Sara Haile, of Nutley, N.J.; his girlfriend, Cassie Sanford, of Harrisburg; and extended family, grandmothers, Violet Haile and Nancy Goodeliunas; his aunts, Mary Gray and husband Tom, Theresa Saleiro and husband Rui, and Jeanne Kiewlak; uncles, Joe Haile and wife Claudia, Robert Haile and wife Karen, John Haile and wife Deb, and Joe Kiewlak and wife Brycia; and several cousins.

He was preceded in death by his grandfathers, Eugene Kiewlak and Joseph Haile and his aunt Joanne Haile Allen.

A time of visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday at Rooke Chapel on the campus of Bucknell University, Lewisburg, followed by a memorial service at 11.

Donations may be made in Michael’s memory to the charity of the donor’s choice.

Funeral arrangements are by the John H. Shaw III Funeral Home, Market and Eighth streets, Lewisburg.
