Valerie S. Leavens, 93, Paxinos

— PAXINOS — Valerie S. Leavens, 93, of 122 Tulip Road, passed away at 10:40 a.m. Saturday, May 3, 2014, at her home after beining in ill health for the past year.

She was born June 17, 1920, in Ranshaw, a daughter of the late Joseph and Mary (Dzienisiewicz) Bzura. On April 18, 1942, in Fort Anniston, Ala., she married Robert J. Leavens who preceded her in death on Oct. 23, 1978. Valerie lived in Ranshaw until her marriage then moved to Shamokin until 1958 when she and her husband and children moved to Meadowview.

Her schooling included St. Anthony Perochial School and was a graduate of Coal Township High School.

She had been employed at Michael’s House of Fashion from 1970 through 1980.

Valerie was a devout Catholic and was a member of Queen of the Most Holy Rosary Church, Elysburg. She was an active member of the Elysburg Senior Action Center where she held the position of secretary, vice president, and was president for 10 years.

She was an avid reader and enjoyed bowling, making crafts, pinocle, entertaining and traveling.

She is survived by four sons and daughters-in-law, Robert and Sheryl Leavens, of Nagshead, N.C., Joseph and Anna Marie Leavens, of Elysburg, James and Cheerlee Leavens, of York, and Michael and Claire Leavens, of Boynton Beach, Fla.; one daughter, Theresa Leavens at home; six grandchildren, Kimberly Leavens, Leanne Werner and husband, Sean, Matthew Leavens and wife, Hollie, Christopher Leavens and wife, Adriana, Nicholas Leavens, and Elizabeth Leavens; four great-grandchildren, Olivia, Sonja and Anthony Leavens and Heidi Werner; one sister, Sister Mary Leona Bzura of the Felician Order of Sisters, of Coraopolis; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by six brothers, Henry, Edward, Leo, Stanley, Frank, and Albert Bzura; four sisters, Jean Callahan, Marie Chaplin, Alma Keleziewski, and Mildred Forest; and one grandson, Robert Leavens.

There will be no viewing or calling hours. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial at 1 p.m. Thursday at Queen of the Most Holy Rosary Church, Elysburg, with Father Al Sceski as celebrant. Please meet at the church by 12:45 p.m..

Inurnment will follow the Mass in All Saints Cemetery, Elysburg.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Valerie’s memory may be made to Queen of the Most Holy Rosary Church, the Ralpho Public Library or Our Lady of Lourdes Regional School.

The Leonard J. Lucas Funeral Home Ltd., 120 S. Market St., Shamokin, has charge of the arrangements.
