Doris D. Shipe, 87, Danville

DANVILLE — Doris Davis Shipe, 87, of 215 Church St., stepped into the arms of Christ on Friday, Jan. 11, 2013, at Emmanuel Nursing Center in Danville. She was born Feb. 16, 1925, in Danville, a daughter of the late Harry and Blanche (Feisler) Davis. She was a lifelong resident of Danville, except for the years of 1950-1951, when her husband, Gene, served with the Army with the Danville National Guard in Colorado Springs Colo.

She graduated from Danville Area High School on “D-Day”, June 6, 1944. She was employed by Geisinger Medical Center and for Nationwide Insurance.

Doris was a lifelong member (from two weeks of age) of First Baptist Church, Danville, where she served faithfully in the senior choir for over 60 years. She joyfully served her church family with countless hours in numerous ways over the years. She also enjoyed volunteering at Geisinger Medical Center with her sister Janie as a patient escort for over 30 years. Doris especially enjoyed bowling. She loved to travel, especially the adventurous cross country drives with her husband, which included a round trip to Fairbanks, Alaska on the Alcan Highway.

Doris lived her life in full dedication and love to her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She loved fellowship with her friends with whom she enjoyed a wide range of activities, always spreading good cheer and love to all.

She is survived by her husband of 66 years, Eugene Reid Shipe whom she married Dec. 14, 1946. Also surviving are three sons, Joe Shipe and his wife Judy, of Danville, Mark Shipe and his wife Deborah, of Milton, and Matt Shipe and his wife Christine, of Danville; and one daughter, Susan Cutler and her husband Steven, of Lititz. She is also survived by nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by five brothers and three sisters.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a celebration of Doris’s life at 12:30 p.m. Monday at First Baptist Church, 20 Brookside Drive (off 642 East) Danville, with the Rev. Dr. Harry H. Wonderland officiating and assisted by the Rev. Dawes Dunham. Friends will be received from 11 to 12:15 p.m. at the church.

Burial will be held at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Memorial Fund of the church or House of Care, c/o Geisinger Medical Center, 100 N. Academy Avenue, Danville, PA 17822-2800.
