J.D. "John" Smith, Middleburg

MIDDLEBURG — J.D. “John” Smith, of Bowersox Road, passed away Wednesday, May 1, 2013, at Evangelical Community Hospital, Lewisburg.

He was born in Scranton.

J.D. retired from the Department of Justice, Lewisburg Penitentiary in 2006 where he helped others as the union president for many years.

He was the “go to guy” for any helpful advice needed in life, as his “walking encyclopedia personality” was one of his strongest traits. Thanks, dad, for taking time from your life to constantly try to find information of how to enhance ours. You lived to heal us and the world and not selfishly for yourself.

His love of children and for our Lord, Jesus Christ, led him to teach Sunday school and many Bible studies at St. Pius X, Selinsgrove. He also became a special advocate in Northumberland County CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) where he represented young children in court.

J.D. was a member of the Moose, VFW, Legion, Masons, NRA, and was a pro life advocate.

He was an avid “bell ringer” every holiday season for the Salvation Army, as well as being a volunteer/helper in so many areas of his life.

The love of his life was Karen, who he was committed to since the age of 16. He has one surviving sister, Bonnie, of Pittston.

He had three children, Charles and his wife Tammy, Jackie and her husband Aaron, and Danielle and her fiance Michael; four grandchildren, Brandy, Dalton, Keaura, and Colby; and two great-grandchildren, William and Candace. He was a loving uncle to 43 nieces and nephews.

J.D. was preceded in death by his mother Elizabeth and her sister, Aunt Regina, and his father, John P. Smith.

Thanks, dad, for your wonderful sense of humor, motorcycle rides, “River-Rat Days”, many camping/fishing trips, always welcoming us back to the nest when needed, open arms, helpful advice, protection, generosity, uplifting chats at the kitchen table, always keeping shoes on our feet, the jokes you’d throw in at our lowest times, the singing and dances, but most of all, your heart and love you gave us unconditionally. We’re so proud of you. You passed your test while here and now have your reward.

As the song says “I can only imagine we all bet you danced!”

We love you and miss you.

Butch, thanks for all the hugs and love you gave me all these years together. I’ll love you always. ~ Karen

There will be no viewing. A celebrate of J.D.’s life will be announced at a later date.

Arrangements are being handled by the Hummel Funeral Home, 574 Hill St., Middleburg.
