Sherwood R. Solomon, 81, Penns Creek

— PENNS CREEK — Sherwood R. Solomon, 81, of 411 Chestnut St., Middleburg, passed away at 11:58 p.m. Thursday, May 9, 2013, at his home.

He was born May 13, 1931, in New Berlin, a son of the late Charles and Verdie (Gilbert) Solomon. On Jan. 31, 1951, he married the former Erma F. Keister who preceded him in death on March 25, 2009.

He was a 1950 graduate of the Lewisburg High School. Earlier in his life he had been employed by Rosedale Dairies, New Berlin, Chef Boy-Ar-Dee in Milton, and PennDOT. He retired in 1993 from AC&F in Milton after more than 30 years of service. Following his retirement he had worked for a number of years at the Middleburg Elementary School in maintenance.

Sherwood was a member of Emmanuel United Church of Christ, Penns Creek where he had served on the consistory, and helped in serving meals.

Earlier in his life he enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was a Phillies and Penn State fan and was always very proud of his garden. He and his wife were active in square dancing with the American Folk Music Association and he never missed a Wednesday at the Lewisburg Farmer’s Market.

He and his wife also enjoyed traveling both in the United States and internationally. His family was the great joy of his life and it was demonstrated with fishing trips to Canada, going to the family cabin, and camping with his grandchildren.

Surviving are one son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Ruth Ann Solomon, of Mount Pleasant Mills; three daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Phil Wagner, of Mifflinburg, Carol and Roy Hupp, of Middleburg, and Karen and Brian Gemberling, of Mifflinburg; seven grandchildren and their spouses, Kevin and Bree Solomon, Dustyn and Rachel Solomon, Kelly and Jason Boyer, Keith and Paige Hupp, Jennifer and Brett Hoffmaster, Adrienne Gemberling, and Nick Gemberling; seven great-grandchildren, Owen, Olivia, and Micah Solomon, Kaitlyn and Emily Boyer, and Riley and Alana Hupp.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Edward Solomon; and one sister, Mabel Betzer.

Friends and family may call from 9 to 11 a.m. Tuesday at Emmanuel United Church of Christ, Penns Creek, followed by the funeral at 11 with the Rev. Michael Price officiating.

Burial will be in the Penns Creek Union Cemetery.
