Gretchen H. Brosius, 68, Northumberland

— NORTHUMBERLAND — Gretchen H. Brosius died on Thursday, Nov. 14, 2013, at her home at 571 Duke Street, surrounded by her family.

She was born March 22, 1945, in Northumberland, a daughter of Richard S. Hummel and Clarice (Kulp) Hummel. Her father was a teacher and an elementary principal who is his early years played semi-professional baseball with the House of David team. His record and that of the team can be found in the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York. Her mother was a very talented milliner, about whom a book was written What Happens Is: The Story of “Hats by Clarice.”

Gretchen married E. Eugene Brosius on July 20, 1969, (the day the first astronauts landed on the moon). Her death ended a marriage of 44 years.

She graduated from Northumberland High School, and attended Bloomsburg University where she received her undergraduate degree and her master’s degree. She was  a qualified Montessori teacher having attained her accreditation through Dr. Hrantz, of Bloomsburg.

She was a beloved teacher — “Miss Gretchen” — to her students. She loved children and preferred them to “adults.” She began her teaching career as a kindergarten teacher in Selinsgrove and taught there for several years. She then opened and operated her Montessori pre-school in her home in Northumberland for 20 years. Thereafter she began the pre-school program in the Northumberland Christian School and served as its principal teacher for a number of years.

Gretchen was very active in the community. She served as mayor from 2002 to 2011, until health problems prevented her from carrying out the duties of that office. She was one of the people instrumental in renovating the Second Street School and establishing the borough offices there. She was also a prime mover in creating the Second Street playground and the pond in the park. She served as a Girl Scout leader and was active in that program in her youth. She established and operated Kids Krafty Korner in the Girl Scout House for a number of summers, and was active in the programs of History Day, Lemonade Day, Fall Festival and Santa in the Park.

She loved the Lord and worshipped Him at the First Regular Baptist Church in Northumberland where she helped with the nursery program.

Surviving, in addition to her husband, are one son, Eric E. Brosius, of Northumberland; two daughters and sons-in-law, Amy Brosius and Andrew Kirkman, of Birmingham, U.K., and Emily and Eric Greco, of King of Prussia; two grandsons, William Alexander Brosius Kirkman and Jesse Clair Greco; one sister, Judith Groninger, of Northumberland; and two brothers and sisters-in-law, Richard L. and Shirley Hummel, of Northumberland, and Jeffrey S. and Cathy Hummel, of Shamokin Dam.

A time of remembrance and thanks to the Lord will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 23, at the Northumberland Christian School, 351 Fifth St., Northumberland, PA 17857.

In lieu of flowers, those who desire to do so may contribute to the Northumberland Christian School or to the Multiple Sclerosis Society, 2040 Linglestown Road, Suite 104, Harrisburg, PA 17110.

Arrangements are by the Joseph W. Epler Funeral Home, 210 King St., Northumberland.
