COAL TOWNSHIP — Phyllis R. (Cavanaugh) Holland, 82, of 1638 W. Walnut St., passed away at 12:24 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 10, 2012, at the Geisinger Medical Center, Danville.
She was born Aug. 1, 1929, in Shamokin, a daughter of the late Thomas and Sarah (Demsko) Cavanaugh. On Nov. 29, 1952, she married James R. Holland in St. Edwards Church, Shamokin, and celebrated 59 loving years together.
Phyllis attended St. Edward’s grade school and high school, graduating in 1947. In 1950, she graduated from St. Mary’s School of Nursing in Philadelphia.
Her employment over the years included the nursing staff at Shamokin State Hospital, office nurse for James Gehris, M.D., a registered nurse for the Head Start Summer Program and as a private duty nurse. She was also employed for 16 years on the staff at Our Lady of Lourdes Regional High School. Throughout her career there she served in various capacities including Health and Physical education instructor, school nurse, cheerleading moderator and secretary of the development office. She retired in June 2000 after her employment with the Northumberland County Area Agency on Aging as a registered nurse and supervisor for the pre-admission assessment department. She was also care manager for in-home services.
She was a member of Our Lady of Hope Catholic Church (formerly St. Joseph’s). She was past secretary of Deanery NCC W., past secretary of Our Lady of Lourdes Alumni Association and Lourdes Boosters, past president of Mother Cabrini Catholic Nurses Association, past board member of Edgewood Swim Club. She was also a member of the Sun Flower Club and the Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians.
Phyllis was an avid pinochle player, enjoyed swimming, needle work, flower arranging and was an expert cook. Her greatest joy was being surrounded by her family especially her loving grandchildren.
She is survived by her devoted husband, Jim, her daughter, Mary Anne “Phyllis” and husband, George, and their children, Elsie and Jillian, of Beltsville, Md.; her son, Christopher “Dutch” and wife, Shannon, and their children, Michael, Timothy and Riley Anne, of Madison, N.J.; brothers-in-law, William, of Hanover, and John, of Elysburg; sister-in-law, Ann Marie (Holland) Slodysko and husband, Andy, of Paxinos; one niece, Jacqueline (Holland) Basse and husband, Tom, and daughter, Cara; one special cousin, Louise Koveleskie and one special daughter, Frances Ann Baker; and a host of other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her loving father-in-law, Richard F. Holland; aunts, Catherine Rollman and Eleanor Shedlusky; and sister-in-law, Marie A. (Carnucci) Holland.
A visitation will be held from 8:30 to 9:45 a.m. Saturday at Our Lady of Hope Church, First and Chestnut streets, Coal Township, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday with the Rev. Anthony Curran, as celebrant.
Interment will follow Mass in St. Edward Cemetery, Coal Township.
As an expression of sympathy, the family requests memorial contributions be made to Our Lady of Lourdes Regional School, 2001 Clinton Avenue, Coal Township, PA 17866.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to James Kelley Funeral Home, 1001 W. Arch St. at Maple Street, Coal Township.
