Hildegarde S. “Hilde” Stankiewicz, 90, Lewisburg

LEWISBURG — Hildegarde Sarah “Hilde” (Papp) Stankiewicz, 90, of Riverview Senior Living Center, formerly of Rivercrest Apartments, passed peacefully from this mortal life early on the evening of July 20, 2013, due to causes incidental to age.

She was a Lewisburg resident since 2009, having moved from Norwich, Conn., where she had been a resident for over 60 years.

Hilde was born in Cleveland, Ohio on Jan. 28, 1923. She was a daughter of the late Joseph Papp and Alexandria Versegi, being the 10th of eleven children. All of her siblings preceded her in death.

She spent her youth in Ohio until the conclusion of the Second World War. Prior to the outbreak of the war, she attended and graduated from beautician school. During the war, she worked in a converted GM plant, riveting nacelles for B-29 bombers for the war effort. She moved to Norwich after the war, where she met her eternal companion and sweetheart Charles Stankiewicz. They married on Sept. 4, 1948 in Cleveland, Ohio and were sealed for time and all eternity in the Logan, Utah Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints on Aug. 10, 1964.

Charles and Hilde raised three sons, Charles J. Stankiewicz (Cynthia), of Lake Wales, Fla., Andrew M. Stankiewicz (Tairi), of Colleyville, Texas, and  Dr.Russell J. Stankiewicz (Barbara), of Lewisburg. They and their spouses survive their parents. Hilde and Charles leave a posterity of 14 grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.

Hilde was an accomplished cosmetologist and hairdresser and she continued to enjoy her profession until she retired in her 80s. She had a bright, inquisitive intellect and a wonderful sense of humor.

Hilde was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. During her adult life in Connecticut, she served in many church leadership positions including as president of the women’s Relief Society, president of the children’s Primary organization, and president of the Young Women’s organization. Additionally, she spent countless hours volunteering in the genealogy libraries of the LDS Church. She had a life-long passion for family history research and missionary work. Her sons served two years as full-time missionaries for the church in the California, North Mission (Charles), The Seattle-Tacoma, Washington Mission (Andrew) and the Philippines-Manila Mission (Russell).

Her husband Charles preceded her in death in September 2006. They are now enjoying a long-awaited reunion.

A viewing will held from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday at the chapel of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 2294 Ridge Road, Northumberland followed by the funeral at 11 with Bishop J.B. Jones of the Lewisburg Ward conducting.

Following the service, Hilde will be transported to Connecticut where she will have a final viewing at 9:30 a.m., with the funeral service to follow at 11 on Thursday at the LDS Chapel, 597 Scotland Road, Norwich.

Internment will be in Maplewood Cemetery, Norwich. Bishop Jonathan Seal of the Norwich Ward will conduct the funeral and Russell J. Stankiewicz will dedicate the grave.

Funeral arrangements are being handled by Cronrath-Grenoble Funeral Home, Lewisburg.

The family has asked that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the missionary fund of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, c/o Bishop JB Jones, Lewisburg Ward, 568 Villa Vista Ave., Lewisburg, PA  17837.
