Morris H. Oberlin, 80, Selinsgrove

— SELINSGROVE — Morris H. Oberlin, 80, of Selinsgrove, went to be with his Lord and Savior at 9:50 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 11, 2013, at the Manor at Penn Village, Selinsgrove.

He was born Aug. 2, 1933, in Selinsgrove, a son of the late Henry and Verna (Murray) Oberlin. On Jan. 1, 1956, he married the former Mary C. Leitzel, who survives.

He proudly served in the Navy from 1952 to 1956 as a Navy gunner’s mate on the USS Lindenwald, stationed in Norfolk, Va. Later in life, he loved to relay to others his experiences while serving in the Navy.

Before entering the Navy, he worked at the Middleburg Silk Mill. After his discharge, he was employed at Weaver & Losch Construction and PPL. He retired in 1995 after 30 years of service from Chef Boy-Ar-Dee, Milton.

Morris was a 52-year member of Winfield Baptist Church, where he had served as assistant Sunday school superintendent, a Sunday school teacher, sang in the choir and the men’s quartet. You could always hear a loud “Amen” when Pastor Corey or Pastor Thornbury preached the blood of Christ for redemption.

Morris was a wonderful husband and father who loved his family dearly and cherished their Sunday family gatherings at his home. He enjoyed fishing, especially ice fishing with Keith, Pat and Chris. He also loved roses, cardinals, sunrises and sunsets. He loved to whistle, and you could always locate him in a crowd by his whistling of hymns. His whistling was carried on by his 6-year-old great-granddaughter, Claire, as she stood by his bedside at the Manor and twice whistled “Jesus Loves Me” to Morris’ delight.

In addition to his wife of 57 years, he is survived by one son, Patrick Oberlin, of Middleburg; one daughter and son-in-law, Mary Jo and Keith Barner, of Liverpool; seven grandchildren, Stacey Steininger and husband Chad, Corey Oberlin, Ben Barner and wife Nikki, Joe Barner, Mary Beth Barner and fiance Ethan Alderfer, and Kristen and Katie Kreider; three great-granddaughters, Claire and Carly Jo Steininger and Kadalyn Barner; one brother, Richard Oberlin, of Sunbury; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Irene and Delbert Walter, of Middleburg, Barbara and Myles Walborn, of Selinsgrove, and Mary Jane and Mark Snyder, of Trevorton; one sister-in-law, Bea Bryan, of Kingston, and brother-in-law, William Bryan and wife Rose Marie, of Wilkes-Barre; and a special friend, Joey Benner, for whom he was a caregiver. Together they played more than 4,000 games of Connect 4 in three years. He loved his two former daughters-in-law, Ginny Oberlin and Wendy Hartman.

He was preceded in death by two sons, three-day-old Patrick Michael in 1957 and Christopher M. Oberlin on May 18, 1994.

Friends and family will be received from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Winfield Baptist Church and from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday, followed by the funeral at 11, with Pastor Corey Mitchell officiating.

Burial with military honors by American Legion Post 25 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6631, both of Selinsgrove, will be in Salem Lutheran Cemetery, Selinsgrove.

Contributions to honor Morris’ memory may be made to Winfield Baptist Church, P.O. 115, Winfield, PA 17889, or Evangelical Hospice, 1 Hospital Drive, Lewisburg, PA 17837, or Shiloh Youth Ranch, 10655 Roseland Road, Sebastian, FL 32958.

Arrangements are by the V.L. Seebold Funeral Home, 601 N. High St., Selinsgrove.
