Timothy F. Snyder, 66, Middleburg

MIDDLEBURG — Timothy Frank Snyder, 66, of 38 Main St., passed away on Sunday, Nov. 4, 2012.

Tim was born Sept. 14, 1946, a son of the late Peron William Snyder and the late Myra Ella (Dinius) Snyder.

He graduated from Middleburg High School in 1964 and was awarded his associate in arts degree from Robert Morris College, Carthage, Ill., in 1967.

Complications from spinal cord surgery in 1967 led to 12 months of rehabilitation. After recovery, he volunteered as a counselor at Hothorpe Hall, a Lutheran camp in Theddingworth, England, and traveled throughout Europe for six months using Arthur Frommer’s “Europe on $5 a Day” as his guide.

Back in the States, Tim continued his education at Temple University and eventually transferred to the University of Pittsburgh, where he pursued his particular interest in special education and received a bachelor of arts in 1971 and a master of education in 1974.

In 1976, Tim co-chaired the Middleburg Bicentennial Committee and was instrumental in inviting 24 citizens from Middleburg, Holland — folks he met on his first European tour — to Middleburg, Pa., to join the celebration.

Tim’s first job was at the Middleburg Swimming Pool as a lifeguard and water safety instructor. After completing his graduate studies, he joined the Central Susquehanna Intermediate Unit, Lewisburg, where he taught and gave children with special needs the skills they needed to be mainstreamed into their local schools.

Tim was a “master gardener” and found great joy working in his garden in Middleburg and his brothers’ garden on St. Armands, Sarasota, Fla., where he spent his winters. The highlights of his extensive travels were his tours of gardens throughout the States and Europe and attending the Chelsea Flower Show in London. An active member at Evangelical Emmanuel Church, Tim served as a member of the church council and worship committee. He was a member of the Sierra Club, the ACLU, the Snyder County Historical Society, the Sarasota Architectural Foundation and, most importantly, was a loyal Roosevelt Democrat.

Surviving are three brothers, Gary, of Carlisle, Dan, of Sarasota, Fla., and Rodney, of Harrisburg; one brother-in-law, Harold Miller, of Blairsville, N.J.; one very special cousin, Lovetta “Dinny” Dinius, of Middleburg; four nephews; four nieces; five great-nieces; and two great-nephews.

Tim also was the godfather of Ericka Puzo, the daughter of his friends, Tony and Susan Puzo.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Philip, and his sister, Sandra Miller.

He also leaves behind very dear friends, the Kevin and Betty Klinger family, who supported Tim and enabled him to live happily and independently at home.

A service of thanksgiving will be held at noon Saturday in Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Middleburg.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Lutheran Church Landscaping Fund, 100 Main St., Middleburg, PA 17842.

Arrangements are by the Hummel Funeral Home, 574 Hill St., Middleburg.
