Donna M. Barber-VanShura, 63, Shamokin

— SHAMOKIN — Donna Marie Barber-VanShura, 63, of Shamokin, died peacefully in her home on Sunday, April 6, 2014, surrounded by her beloved family, her husband, Donald, her daughter, Jill, her sister, Carol, and her niece, Maria, all of whom provided continuous care in her last days.

She was born Sept. 1, 1950, in Shamokin, a daughter of the late John “Smitty” and Margaret Shirley (Koshinskie) Barber. On April 3, 1971, in St. Edward Church, she married the love of her life, Donald James VanShura. They lived most of their lives in her childhood neighborhood at 412 S. Shamokin St., Shamokin.

Donna attended St. Edward Elementary School and graduated from Our Lady of Lourdes High School in 1968.

She was employed at the Anthracite Shirt factory for a brief period of time following her wedding. She also worked at the Shamokin Kmart for more than 10 years.

She was a lifelong member of Mother Cabrini Church and a devout Roman Catholic. She was an avid believer in the power of daily prayer as well as the mysteries of the Holy Rosary. She took immense pride in her home and her creativity, often making handmade gifts for family and many friends and their families.

In addition to her loving husband, Don, she is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Jill and Christopher Yablonski; her greatest joys, her granddaughters, Chole and Margo; her older brother, Edward and Marg Barber, of Westerville, Ohio, her twin brother, Michael and Nacy Barber, of Coal Township, her best friend and younger sister, Carol and Greg Landi, of Hanover; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. She will forever be remembered as one of our family’s guardian angels.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Mother Cabrini Church. The viewing will be private. Relatives and friends are asked to meet at the church at 9:45.

Burial will follow in All Saints Cemetery, Elysburg.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made in her honor to Our Lady of Lourdes Regional Memorial Fund, 2001 Clinton Ave., Coal Township, PA 17866.

The Leonard J. Lucas Funeral Home Ltd., 120 S. Market St., Shamokin, has charge of the arrangements.
