Thomas C. Smith, 82, Selinsgrove

SELINSGROVE — Thomas C. Smith, 82, of Oak Drive, passed away peacefully on Tuesday morning, Oct. 23, 2012, at his home surrounded by his family.

He was born Feb. 7, 1930, in Winfield, a son of the late Charles F. Sr. and Sarah Mabel (Baney) Smith. On Sept. 10, 1951, he married the former Georgianne Hoover who survives.

Tom was a 1948 graduate of Selinsgrove High School and in 1951 entered the Air Force where he was discharged in 1955 with the rank of staff sergeant.

Earlier in his life he had been employed in the family business, Smith Atlantic Service. He loved to drive truck which he did for Pepsi and Follmer Trucking receiving a 33-year safe driver award. He had also worked for 20 years in maintenance for Monroe Township.

He was a member of St. Paul’s “Middlecreek Dam” Lutheran Church where he had taught the children’s Sunday school. He was a member of Lafayette Lodge 194 Free and Accepted Masons, Selinsgrove, where he had served as master in 1969, and a member of the Harrisburg Consistory.

Tom was an avid gardner and was known for his beautiful vegetable garden. He was a Phillies fan and enjoyed the Sunday night family poker game. He was a man with a quick wit and had a joke to tell on any subject. The greatest joy of his life were his grandchildren.

In addition to his wife of 61 years, he is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Thomas C. Jr. and Elaine Smith, of Selinsgrove; two daughters and sons-in-law, Kathy A. and Rick Bailey, of Selinsgrove, and Amy L. and Rich Guttendorf, of Palmyra; eight grandchildren, Ben, Cody, Alysha, Josh, Chelsey, Keera, Richie, and Elizabeth;  one great-grandchild, Aubrey; one sister and brother-in-law, Beatrice and George Schrey, of Selinsgrove; sister-in-law, Georgine Smith, of Selinsgrove; brother-in-law, Richard Hoover, of Selinsgrove; and his granddog, Lilly.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Charles Smith Jr.; and one brother-in-law, Robert Hoover.

A private funeral will be held in the V.L. Seebold Funeral Home, 601 N. High St., Selinsgrove, with the Rev. Hugo Schroeder officiating.

Burial will follow in Globe Mills Cemetery, Middleburg.

Contributions in Tom’s memory may be made to St. Paul’s “Middlecreek Dam” Lutheran Church.
