LEWISBURG — Robert E. Dunkerly, 67, of 805 Hillcrest Lane, passed away Friday morning, Sept. 6, 2013, at the Evangelical Community Hospital, Lewisburg.
A native of Hazelton, he was born Oct. 3, 1945, a son of the late Samuel and Eleanor (Dodd) Dunkerly. He was married to the former Mary O’Neil and his death breaks a marital union of 42 years.
Robert earned a bachelor of science in Math in 1967 and a master’s in psychology in 1969 at Bucknell University, and a PhD in education at Penn State in 1979. He served with the Army from 1969-1972 in Germany.
He began service at Bucknell University as media director, then associate registrar and as registrar for a total of 39 years of service.
Robert was a member of Sacred Heart Church, Lewisburg where he served as Lector, greeter, and helped with Marriage Encounter, Pre-Cana and the Parish Youth Group and served on Parish Council.
He enjoyed photography, reading, drawing and model railroading.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by one son, Robert M. Dunkerly, of Richmond, Va.
Friends and relatives will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the John H. Shaw III Funeral Home, Market and Eighth streets, Lewisburg. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Sacred Heart Church, 41 S. Eighth St., Lewisburg, with the Rev. Msgr. William M. Richardson as celebrant, and assisted by his brother-in-law, the Rev. Thomas O’Neil.
Burial with military honors will follow in the Lewisburg Cemetery.
The family will provide flowers and asks that donations in Robert’s memory be made to Sacred Heart Church, 41 S. Eighth St., Lewisburg, PA 17837, or the National Park Foundation, P.O. Box 17394, Baltimore, MD 21298-9450, or to any animal rescue of the donor’s choice.
