Mary Alice (Duff) Haydt, 92, Sunbury

— SUNBURY — Mary Alice (Duff) Haydt, 92, passed away on Saturday, Sept. 7, 2013, at the SUN Hospice Care Center, Sunbury, surrounded by her family and friends.

Mary Alice was born March 16, 1921, in Pittsburgh in Shadyside Hospital, the only daughter of the late David and Bridget “Bertha” Duff.

Mary Alice was educated in the Pittsburgh Catholic schools from first grade on. She attended Mount Mercy College,now Carlow University, on scholarship, and graduated in 1943 with a bachelor of arts in biology and chemistry.

She worked many jobs in her lifetime, including medical technician, teacher and social worker for Northumberland County.

She moved to Lewisburg in 1951 with her husband, Augustus F. Haydt and from there to Sunbury.

She and her husband were parishioners at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, later St. Monica’s. Following her husband’s death on June 18, 1965, she raised her six children on her own and worked full time.

Mary Alice was active in many community groups and boards, including St. Michael’s Boy Scout troop, the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Red Cross, and AARP where she served as treasurer and president of the Sunbury Chapter.

Following her retirement in 1983, Mary Alice traveled regularly, spending time with her family in California and Alaska. Her family gathered in San Francisco in 2011 to celebrate her 90th birthday. She lived the last year of her life at Manor Care in Sunbury.

She is survived by her six children and their spouses, Patricia and Richard Nault, of Juneau, Alaska, John Haydt, of Sunbury, Katherine Gattuso, of Redlands, Calif., Alice Haydt, of Sunbury, Augustus and Janis Haydt, of Honey Brook, and Nancy and Thomas Balestreri, of San Mateo, Calif.; six grandchildren and their spouses, Kevin and Clarissa Nault, of Albuquerque, N.M., Colleen Shrawder and Matthew Kreska, of Sinking Spring, Timothy and Erica Nault, of Spokane, Wash., Allison Haydt and fiance, of Sierra Vista, Ariz., Katrina Shrawder, of Fort Collins, Colo., and Thomas S. Balestreri, of San Mateo, Calif.; two great-grandchildren, Kathryn and Rebecca Kreska, of Sinking Spring; and many nieces and nephews; and her dear friend of more than 50 years, Mrs. Arlene Willard, of Harrisburg.

A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11:15 a.m. Tuesday at St. Monica’s Catholic Church, Sunbury, with the Rev. Fred Wangwe AJ, as celebrant.

Mary Alice had a lifelong love of learning and reading. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Degenstein Library, Sunbury, PA 17801, would be appreciated.
