Frederick H. “Pete” Pontius, 86, Northumberland

— NORTHUMBERLAND — Frederick H. “Pete” Pontius, 86, of Northumberland, passed away on Tuesday, Sept. 10, 2013, at his home.  

He was born Jan. 12, 1927, in Sunbury, a son of the late Clarence Henry and Thelma (Lawrence) Pontius.

Pete was a 1944 graduate of Sunbury High School and then went on to serve his country during World War II. He was extremely proud of his service starting with basic training in Ft. Knox, Ky., coming out as a staff sergeant and was assigned to the Sixth Calvary of the Third Army. He then served in the Army Reserves and National Guard, retiring as a chief warrant officer from the Reserves with a total of 21 years of service to his country.  

After active duty, Pete attended General Motors Institute for his sales and management certificate so he could go to work with his father at Pontius Motor Company in Sunbury, which was founded by his grandfather, AW Pontius. He continued his career at the First National Bank in Sunbury, where he retired as vice president of the loan department in 1986. After retiring, he dedicated the rest of his life to his family and helping them.

Pete was active in many community clubs and organizations during his working career.    Pete enjoyed his model trains and going to model train shows.

He is survived by his wife, Carol J. Zeckman Pontius; one son, Jeff P. Pontius, of Sunbury; one daughter, Jennifer M. Marczyk, of Dillsburg; three stepchildren, Joanne Wagner, of Selinsgrove, Jeffrey R. Wagner, of Shamokin Dam, and Brenda L. Confer, of Centre Hall; four grandchildren, Angie Pontius, Rachael Pontius, Jeffrey Marczyk, and Jocelyn Marczyk; and his former spouses, June A. Pontius and Lesa M. Smith.  

Friends will be received from noon to 1:55 p.m. Friday at the David T. Zweier Funeral Home, Inc., 157 Chestnut St., Sunbury, followed by the funeral at 2 with Pastor Gary Smith of Calvary Tabernacle, Sunbury, officiating.

Burial will be in the Lewisburg Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Pete’s memory may be made to the Wounded Warriors Project, P.O. Box 758517, Topeka, KS 66675.
