Roy I. Gearhart, 88, Shamokin Dam

— SHAMOKIN DAM — Roy I. Gearhart, 88, of King Avenue, went home to be with his Lord and Savior, at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 20, 2013, at the Columbia Montour Home Hospice at Maria Hall, Danville.

He was born Oct. 18, 1924, in McAlisterville, a son of the late Isaac and Lilly (Stuck) Gearhart. On Jan. 5, 1948, he married the former Betty A. Houseworth, who survives.

He attended Evandale schools and was a veteran of World War II serving in the Army Eighth Infantry Division in the European Theatre of France and Germany. He was wounded two times and was awarded the Purple Heart and one Bronze Oakleaf Cluster, the European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with three Bronze Stars, and the World War II Victory Medal.

Roy retired from PP&L on Feb. 28, 1986, after 35 years of service.

He was a faithful and diligent member of the Church of the Nazarene,  Selinsgrove, since its founding. He had served as treasurer for 22 years plus many other offices, including the music ministry, in which he and Betty took part.

Roy was also a member of the American Legion.

He enjoyed fishing and traveling with friends and family all across the United States.

Music was an important part of Roy’s life and in later years, he did crossword puzzles and word searches.

Roy will be remembered for his love for his Lord and Savior, his love of music, and the love he had for his wife.

He will be greatly missed by many family members and a great assortment of friends and neighbors.

Surviving, in addition to his wife of 65 years, are one sister-in-law and her husband, Marietta and John Stevens, of Shamokin Dam; and his many loving nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by five sisters, Mary Bishop, Pearl Naylor, Pauline Brown, Martha Varner and May Long; and five brothers, William, John, Norman, George and Frank Gearhart. Roy was the last of his immediate family.

Friends and family will be received from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday at the Selinsgrove Church of the Nazarene, followed by the funeral at 11 with his pastor, the Rev. Charles H. Melton, officating.

Burial with military honors accorded by American Legion Victory Post #25 and V.F.W. Post 6631, both of Selinsgrove, will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Selinsgrove.

Contributions to honor Roy’s memory may be make to the Selinsgrove Church of the Nazarene Building Fund, 543 W. Sassafras St., Selinsgrove, PA 17870.

Arrangements are by the V.L. Seebold Funeral Home, 601 N. High St., Selinsgrove.
