Darrell W. Heiliger, 87, Millersburg

— MILLERSBURG — Darrell W. Heiliger, 87, of Millersburg, and a long-time resident of RR Dalmatia, passed away Saturday, Aug. 17, 2013, surrounded by his family at his home after a courageous battle with Parkinson’s.

He was born Dec. 17, 1925, in Holyoke, Colo., a son of the late George and Ida (Bockholdt) Heiliger. In 1969, he married the former Regina Lenker, who survives.

Raised a farmer, he joined the Army in 1945 after graduating high school. He was a veteran of World War II and graduated from the engineer school at Belvoir, Va., before going to Korea. He served seven months in a combat infantry company where he became first sergeant. Darrell earned two Bronze Star Medals and the Combat Infantry Badge. He attended the University of Nebraska for two years, and was recalled to serve in the Korean War in 1950.

Darrell was employed as a Marine superintendent for Pentzien Engineering and Contracting Corp., retiring after 25 years.

He was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Millersburg, an associate member of the County Line Trinity Methodist Church, Dalmatia, a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars, the American Legion, the VFW Post 5750 Rifle Club, a life member of the 9th Infantry Regiment Association, the 2nd Infantry Division Association, the Korean War Veterans Association of Pennsylvania, the Masonic Lodge 702, Herndon, and the Harrisburg Consistory. He was an active member in the Mahanoy and Mahantango Historical Society, serving as president in 2000.

Darrell’s hobbies included hunting, photography, traveling and gardening, and has written narratives of his service in the Philippines and Korea.

In addition to his loving wife, he is survived by two sons, Wayne and Ward Heiliger, both of Omaha, Neb.; one daughter, Annette Bixler, of Dalmatia; one sister, Phyllis Krueger, of Lincoln, Neb.; one brother-in-law, Arlo Lenker, of Herndon; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; six nephews; four nieces; four great-nephews; and four great-nieces.

He was preceded in death by one son, Michael Heiliger; one grandson; and one brother, Virgil Heiliger.

A viewing will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the James A. Reed Funeral Home, Pillow and from 11 a.m. to noon Saturday at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Millersburg, followed by the funeral at noon with Pastor Mark Hoffman officiating. A memorial service will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 25, at County Line United Methodist Church, Dalmatia.
