RICHMOND, Ky. — Charles W. “Chip” Downs III, 61, of Richmond, passed away on Thursday, Sept. 4, 2013, in Lexington at the Baptist Health Center.
He was born July 11, 1952, in Pelham, N.Y., a son of Nancy-Linn Nellis, of Stockton Springs, Maine and the late Charles W. Downs Jr.
While Chip had been battling multiple sclerosis for the past 30-plus years, the cause of death was cancer of the lungs.
He attended both Selinsgrove and Middleburg schools in Pennsylvania. Having moved to Kentucky, Chip attended the University of Kentucky.
An engaging young person, he loved to read tomes or books of any kind. By the age of 12 he had read the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam and then read it again.
Chip was of Buddhist religion.
A lover of animals, Chip was known as the “dog whisperer”.
In addition to his mother, Nancy-Linn Nellis, he is survived by his cousins, Kenneth S. Nellis, of Washington, D.C., and Priscilla Royall, of Ambler, Pa.; his son, Wolfgang Downs, of Sunbury, Pa., son of his marriage to Torre Goodling Downs, of Middleburg, Pa.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Linn H. Downs Endo; his little sister whom he adored, Fonda Leah Shaffer; his cousin, Merrie Nellis; his father Charles W. Downs Jr.; and grandparents, uncles and aunts.
