Mary A. Stull, 91, Middleburg

— MIDDLEBURG — Mary A. Stull, of Middleburg, went to her eternal rest in God’s blessed peace on Wednesday, Sept. 11, 2013, at her home with family by her side. She celebrated her 91st birthday at her son’s home just 11 days prior with all her family present.

She was born Aug. 31, 1922, in Carbondale, a daughter of the late Dora and Leonard Hensler, and was reared in Scranton. On Sept. 12, 1944, she was married to Ernest D. Stull Jr. who preceded her in death on March 12, 1976.

Mary graduated from Scranton Central High School, Keystone College, Bloomsburg University and completed graduate courses at McGill University, Toronto, Ontario.

She taught English at Middle High School prior to her retirement.

She was a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church where she served in many capacities including teaching the adult Sunday school classes. She was a life member of Pennsylvania Association of Retired School Employees. She was also a member of the Snyder County Historical Society, Middleburg Retired Persons Association, had been a member of Middleburg Home Study Club, and served on the board of Friends of The Manor at Penn Village.

She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, David and Nancy Stull, of Middleburg; two granddaughters and their spouses, Amanda and Tony Moyer, of Beavertown, and Rachel and Dennis Maney, of Bellefonte; and two great-grandchildren, Connor and Kahlan Maney.

Mary loved to travel and did so as much as possible. In the summer of 1972, she and Ernie traveled to California. Ernie’s health then became poor, but in the summer after he passed away (76), she took her cat, Ember, packed her car, and drove to Washington state, down to California, in to Arizona where she met friends, took the southern route to Florida, and then swung up to Williamsburg where she spent a few days with David and Nancy before returning home. In succeeding summers she traveled with her family from Maine to Florida, Louisiana, etc., staying in all states east of the Mississippi except Ohio. She traveled abroad several times. In 1980, she traveled extensively throughout Europe with a special stop in Oberammergau to see the “Passion of Christ” performance. Her travels also included the British Isles, and in 1984, accompanied by her friend Rachael, she visited Greece.

A visitation will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Middleburg, followed by the funeral at 11 with Pastor William Jones officiating. At Mary’s request, the casket will be closed.

Burial will take place in Glendale Cemetery.

Respecting the wishes of the deceased, in lieu of flowers or contributions, the family suggest you do a random act of kindness for a stranger.

Arrangements are by the Hummel Funeral Home, 574 Hill St., Middleburg.
