SUNBURY — Gilbert L. Smith, 88, of Sunbury, passed away at 11:23 p.m. Friday, Feb. 8, 2013, at the Sunbury Community Hospital.
He was born April 26, 1924, in Sunbury, a son of the late William L. and Maude (Swartzlander) Smith. He was married to the former June H. Hall who preceded him death on Dec. 5, 1996.
Gilbert was a 1942 graduate of Sunbury High School and a veteran of World War II serving in the Army.
He was a former employee of Champ Hats and retired from Shikellamy School District.
He was a member of the American Legion Post 201.
Gilbert loved his dog “Blackie”, was a big fan of the television series “Mash”, and enjoyed sports. His favorite teams were the Pittsburg Steelers, Philadelphia Phillies and the St.Louis Cardinals.
He is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Robert L. and Deborah Smith, of Sunbury, and Dale E. and Tracie Smith, of Milton; three grandchildren, Jennifer, Billie Jo Smith and Kristin Tyson; one great-grandchild, Troy Tyson Jr.; one sister, Shirley F Shaffer, of Shamokin Dam; and five nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by one great-grandson, Tyler Smith; four brothers, Truman, William L. Jr., John F., and Ray C. Smith; and one sister, Leahbelle Whalen.
A visitation will be held from 10 to 10:55 a.m. Thursday at the David T. Zweier Funeral Home, Inc., 157 Chestnut St., Sunbury, followed by the funeral at 11 with the Rev. Richard Fangmann of Zion Lutheran Church, officiating.
Burial will follow in Northumberland Memorial Park, Stonington.
