RICHFIELD — Luther A. Beaver, 91, of Richfield, passed away on Monday, Nov. 18, 2013, at the Sunbury Community Hospital.
He was born March 26, 1922, in McClure, a son of the late Frank M. and Elizabeth D. (Baker) Beaver. On Feb. 28, 1942, he married the former Janet R. Dietz who preceded him in death on April 30, 1998.
Luther was a graduate of McClure High School. After high school he served in the Army Air Corps where he served during World War II as a flight crew chief in Alaska and completed many missions. During his time serving in the Army Air Corps he also studied mathematics through the University of Missouri.
After returning home from the service in 1945 he started working at the Silk Mill in Selinsgrove. In the 1950s he became actively involved in farming and poultry and was a founder and former past president of the Snyder County Poultry Growers Association. He served 22 years as the administrator for the Veterans Affairs for Snyder County and was past president and chairman for the Pennsylvania Veterans Association.
Luther was a member of the Middleburg Joint School Board for 18 years where he had served as a treasurer and president. He was previously a supervisor the West Perry Township.
Luther was a member of the Middleburg Masonic Lodge 619 for more than 50 years, a member of Tall Cedars of Lebanon, the Harrisburg Consistory, a lifetime member of the NRA, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
In his spare time he enjoyed hunting and fishing.
Surviving are one son and daughter-in-law, Luther A. Jr. and Dawn (Kauffman) Beaver, of Bloomsburg; two daughters and sons-in-law, Sandra (Beaver) and Dr. David Cottrell, of Winfield, and Susan (Beaver) and Ed Snyder, of Richfield; grandchildren, Chad Cottrell, Cathy Cottrell, Tracy (Snyder) Maneval and husband, Dale, Shari (Snyder) Sheaffer and husband, Jeremy, Scott Snyder and wife, Wendy, Jill (Snyder)Musser and husband, Brent, Todd Beaver and wife, Amy, and Kristen (Beaver) Pineda; 12 great grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Sylvia Beaver, of Sanborn, N.Y.; and his caregivers with whom he was close, Penny Sheaffer and Sandy Fogelman.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Joseph Beaver; his brother-in-law, Hulbert Minehart; and one sister, Betty (Beaver) Minehart.
Friends and family will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Hummel Funeral Home, 574 Hill St., Middleburg and from 10 to 11a.m. Saturday at St. John Lutheran Church, Richfield where the funeral will follow at 11with the Rev. Andrew Weaver officiating.
Burial with military honors will follow in Richfield Union Cemetery.
