Eugene H. Koehler, 73, Riverside

RIVERSIDE — Eugene H. Koehler, 73, of 900 Blue Hill Drive, passed away Thursday, Nov, 15, 2012, while hunting in Maine.

He was born July 4, 1939 in Philadelphia, a son of the late Eugene I. and Genevieve (Moskal )Koehler. On Jan. 27, 1962, he married the former Pauline E. “Polly” Zellers, who survives. They were married 50 years.

He graduated from Plymouth Whitemarsh High School in Plymouth Meeting, and a 1962 graduate of Lock Haven University with a degree in physical education.

Gene was a physical education and driver’s education teacher for 30 years. He taught in the Conamaugh, Montgomery, Selinsgrove, and Benton School Districts. He retired from Benton in1993.

Gene also coached football and basketball during his teaching career.

He was a member of St. Paul’s-Emmanuel United Methodist Church, Danville, a founding member of the Good Times Hunting Club, Nordmont, Gideons International, and a life member of the Danville Elks.

Gene cherished time spent with his family, especially his three grandsons.

He was an avid outdoorsman who loved hunting and fishing. He also enjoyed golf, woodworking, fly tying, and traveling.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, are his daughter Jennifer Koehler Gerst and his grandsons Logan E., Tanner A., and Trevor P., all of Shermans Dale; two brothers and one sister-in-law,  Ronald and Denise Koehler, of New Castle and Allen Koehler, of Collegeville; two sisters and brothers-in-law,  Margaret “Peggy” and Glenn Cushard, of Jackson, Miss. and Laurie and Ronald Kulp, of Boyertown; and 14 nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his son-in-law, Albert K. Gerst III.

Friends will be received from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Paul’s-Emmanuel United Methodist Church, 305 Pine St., Danville, followed by a Celebration of Gene’s life at 11 with Pastor Greg Molter officiating.

Entombment will be in The Columbarium in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Danville, at the convenience of the family.  

The family will provide the flowers.
