Gordon Thompson, 89, Lewisburg

LEWISBURG — Gordon Thompson, 89, of Skyline Avenue, originally from England, passed away on Saturday, Dec. 8, 2012, at his home.

He was born Aug. 3, 1923, in Warrington, Lancashire County, England, a son of the late Anne Bina Thompson.

In 1938, at the age of 15, he ran away from home because he could not continue his education and joined the American Merchant Marines. He served with the Merchant Marines for 11 years, starting as an oiler and achieving the rank of junior engineer. Gordon loved books and reading, but he loved history and the law above all. He was self educated and taught American History to the service men during the second World War. Gordon was also a National Maritime Union organizer; and was on the Board of Trustees for the National Marine Historical Society. He took his last run on a ship in 1948 and left the Merchant Marines settling in New York.

In 1949, he founded and operated the David J. Thompson Mailing Corp in Queens, N.Y. In 1990, he moved the business to Berwick. He opened the Gordon Thompson Learning Center in Bloomsburg so his employees would have a place to take their children and keep them safe while they worked.

Everything Gordon did in his life was because it was the right thing to do. He did things to help make the world better. Gordon believed highly in education and set up a trust fund in England to help the less fortunate children receive an education. He was an AA speaker multiple times over and was on the first board of directors for the Fortune Society, which is dedicated to prison reform. Gordon was an active participant in the trade union movement and the civil rights movement.

Surviving are one daughter, Sharon G. Thompson, of  New York; one grandson, Edward J. Thompson-Hiross, of  New York; one son, David J. Thompson, of Sugarloaf; Gordon’s wife of nine years, Srihana “Oci” (Bone) Thompson, of  Lewisburg; two daughters, Linda Thompson, of Lewisburg and Dewi Orianna, of Indonesia; and one granddaughter, Agatha Nugroho, of Indonesia.

Friends will be received from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Cronrath-Grenoble Funeral Home, South Second and St. Louis streets, Lewisburg, where a memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. with the Rev. Dr. Gary Hackenberg, retired United Church of Christ pastor, officiating.

The family will provide the flowers and suggests contributions in Gordon’s name be made to “The Gordon Thompson/ Molly Nelson Maddock Trust”, c/o Srihana Thompson, 391 Skyline Ave., Lewisburg, PA 17837. The trust provides a summer learning and educational experience for the impoverished kids from his home in England.

Expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.cronrathgrenoblefuneralhome.com.
