Harry W. Rathfon, 86, Selinsgrove

SELINSGROVE — Harry W. Rathfon, 86, a resident of The Manor at Penn Village, passed away peacefully at 11:19 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 28, 2013.

Harry was born Sept. 21, 1926, in Salem, a son of the late Wilson and Gertie (Brinninger) Rathfon.

He left high school to serve in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Following his discharge, he returned to Selinsgrove, completed his GED, and married Virginia I. (Wendt) Rathfon in 1947.

A lifelong resident of Selinsgrove, Harry was known to generations of locals as “the milkman.” He was a partner in the former Selinsgrove Dairies for more than 30 years. Following the sale of the dairy, Harry began a second career as a dispatcher at Bilger Fuels in Middleburg.

Harry’s lifelong passion was cars. He was always among the first to visit the local Ford and Chevrolet showrooms when the new car models were introduced. For many years, Harry alternated his annual car trades between those two Selinsgrove businesses.

Harry was also an avid coin collector and an accomplished dancer. He and his wife Ginny were well-known at local social clubs where they danced weekly. Even in recent years, people who spoke with him always recalled the pleasure of watching them skim (a little dairy pun that Harry enjoyed) across the dance floor. Harry was a lifelong member of the Loyal Order of the Moose and the American Legion.

He is survived by his son, Joel Rathfon, of Las Cruces, N.M.; his daughter and son-in-law, Starlene and James Willis, of Bloomingdale, Ill.; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Harry was predeceased by his wife Ginny in 2010; and earlier by his sister, Hazel Bingaman; and his brother John.

Contributions in Harry’s memory may be made to the Activities Department at The Manor at Penn Village, 51 Route 204, Selinsgrove, PA 17870.

As Harry wished, family members will gather in the spring to celebrate his life along Penns Creek as was done for his wife, Ginny, in 2010.

Funeral arrangements are by the V.L. Seebold Funeral Home Inc., 601 N. High St., Selinsgrove.
