Theresa L. Salwocki, 89, Coal Township

— COAL TOWNSHIP — Theresa L. Salwocki, 89, formerly of 1132 Tioga St., passed away Friday, June 20, 2014, at Columbia-Montour Home Hospice at Maria Hall, Danville. She was ill for eight months.

Born Dec. 19, 1924, in Shamokin, she was a daughter of the late Stephen and Anna (Hopta) Midway.

She attended the former St. Mary’s Elementary School in Shamokin as well as Shamokin High School.

On Sept. 25, 1946, in the former St. Mary’s Church, Shamokin, she married Stanley J. Salwocki, who preceded her in death on May 12, 1983.

Theresa was a homemaker and a mom. She enjoyed cooking, baking and making her homemade soups. She also enjoyed working on puzzles and playing pinochle.

She was a very active member of the former St. Stanislaus Church, now Mother Cabrini Parish in Shamokin. For many years, she helped at the St. Stanislaus School cafeteria and also helped with making pierogies. She also enjoyed playing bingo.

Theresa, along with some of her friends, helped to clean the former St. Stanislaus Church. After working, they walked to McDonald’s to enjoy a meal together.

Before becoming hospitalized in November, she always looked forward to her monthly bus trips to the casino with her good friends, Trudy, Kathy, Donna and Verna.

Survivors include five children, Carol Salwocki, of Harrisburg, Nancy Salwocki and her husband, Ralph Evans, of Danville, Stan Salwocki and his wife, Jan, of Milton, Terry Ferdock and Phil Krebs, of Coal Township, and Dave Salwocki and his wife, Pamela, of Danville; seven grandchildren, Bryan Frank, Allyson Arnold, Eric Salwocki and his wife, Chantelle, Laura Salwocki, Stephen Salwocki, Mark Evans and his wife, Dawn, and Jonathan Evans and his wife, Kristin; seven great-grandchildren, Kaylee Frank, Regina Arnold, Peyton Salwocki and Abby, Mya, Aiden and Brady Evans; one sister, Catherine Basalego, of Venice, Fla.; three sisters-in-law, Eleanor Polastre, of Sacramento, Calif., Alma Payne, of Shamokin, and Regina Donohue and her husband, Thomas, of Neptune, N.J.; 11 nieces and 15 nephews; several cousins; and her best friend, Trudy White, of Ranshaw.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Dorothy Sabol and Anna Thomas, and two brothers, George and Stephen Midway.

The viewing will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, June 24, and 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 25, at the Stephen A. Chowka Funeral Home, 114 N. Shamokin St., Shamokin. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 25, in Mother Cabrini Church, Shamokin.

Burial will follow in St. Stanislaus Cemetery, Coal Township.
