Rev. Kenneth E. Spangler, 81, Chambersburg

CHAMBERSBURG — The Rev. Kenneth Eugene Spangler, 81, of Chambersburg, went home to be with our Heavenly Father on Father's Day, Sunday, June 20, 2010. He passed away peacefully at home at 9:02 a.m., surrounded by his loving family and dogs.

He was born Dec. 20, 1928, in New Berlin, a son of the late Paul R. and Elma M. (Wetzel) Spangler. He was married to the former Mary Ellen Sassaman, and they celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on June 10.

Kenneth graduated from Lewisburg High School in 1946 before serving in the Army from 1946 to 1948. In 1952, he graduated from Bucknell University, Lewisburg.

He was an Eagle Scout and earned the God and Country Award.

He attended the Lutheran Theological Seminary in Gettysburg, graduating in February 1955, and was ordained on March 6, 1955, as a Lutheran minister. He served at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Numidia and St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Aristes from March 1955 to August 1963. For the next 25 years, he served at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Fayetteville, retiring in December 1988.

He was a member of St. Luke Lutheran Church.

Kenneth enjoyed visiting his parishioners, gardening, woodworking, traveling and spending time at his mountain home in Weikert.

He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

He is survived by four daughters and sons-in-law, Kathy and Joseph Kroepil, of Chambersburg, Sue and Jay Gross, of Johnstown, Debra and Michael Norcross, of Harrisburg, and Lucy and Jerry Brookens, of Fayetteville; grandchildren, Ryan Norcross, Kevin and Ellen Kroepil and Joel and Brandon Brookens; four brothers, Clair, Harold, Orville and Gary, and one sister, Julia Fetter.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Alvin, and one sister, Marian Reich.

A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Friday in St. Luke Lutheran Church, Chambersburg, with the Rev. Beth Miller officiating.
