WASHINGTON (AP) — Humane officials say they have found caretakers for 37 malnourished horses on a western Pennsylvania farm where officials also found the frozen carcasses of three starved horses.
Washington Area Humane Society Officer Matt Walsh says he plans to charge the owner of the South Franklin Township farm with animal cruelty. Walsh says she abandoned the farm, about 20 miles south of Pittsburgh, and left the animals to starve before they were found on Saturday.
The Meadows Standardbred Owners Association at the Meadows Racetrack and Casino in nearby Houston, Pa. is donating hay to feed the animals and will also pay for veterinary care.
Humane officials say they received reports about the horse mistreatment for months, but had to go to courts to raid the farm and seize the animals.
