SELINSGROVE — Susquehanna University’s student-run radio station WQSU-FM was honored for excellence in broadcast journalism by the Pennsylvania Associated Press Broadcasters Association (PAPBA) at its 2013 News Awards presentation May 18 in Harrisburg. The station won a first-place award for Sports Play-by-Play in the category of Medium and Small Market Stations.
The industry recognition is WQSU’s third consecutive first-place award and its eighth PAPBA award in the last nine years for Sports Play-by-Play. It was the first time WQSU has competed in the new, larger category, which includes radio stations in all markets except the Philadelphia and Pittsburgh regions. WQSU’s previous awards were won in the Small Market Station category.
This year’s winning entry, titled “Susquehanna University Basketball 2012,” was from Susquehanna’s 80-71 men’s basketball victory over Catholic University on Feb. 11, 2012. Veteran broadcaster Jack Burns called the play-by-play. Susquehanna student Thad Yeiser, Class of 2012, was the color analyst, and then-juniors Nick Ferlise and Andrew Turner were the engineers.
The entries were judged by the Associated Press Radio Association of California, Nevada, Hawaii, Arizona, Idaho, New Mexico, Washington, Colorado, Utah, Montana, Alaska, and Oregon.
