Bucknell’s Bicycles Against Poverty to host Benefit Ride on the Buffalo Valley Rail Trail (BVRT)

— LEWISBURG — The Buffalo Valley Recreation Authority (BVRA) is teaming up with Bicycles Against Poverty (BAP), for a benefit ride on the BVRT at 10 a.m. on April 12. BAP is an organization created in 2008 by two Bucknell University students to tackle poverty in Ugandan villages by supplying bicycles to villagers made possible through microfinance loans to local manufacturers. Bicycles provide villagers with easier access to vital necessities like water, markets, healthcare facilities, schools, and other hard-to-reach places. BAP currently operates as a 501 (c) 3 non-profit organization based out of New York City.

Participants at the April 12 event are invited to bike, run, or walk to raise awareness of BAP, get some exercise on the trail, and help strengthen our local community. The event will begin at Buffalo Valley Outfitters (Route 45 and Reitz Blvd., Lewisburg), and numerous locations on the trail will be marked by event sponsors to raise awareness of community resources available to trail users.

Online registration is available at — registration is $5 (family or individual – larger donations accepted), and day of registration will also be available at the event. Every participant will receive a raffle ticket to win sponsor-donated prizes. Buffalo Valley Outfitters has donated two gift certificates each good for a bike or kayak rental.  Additional raffle prizes will also be included in the drawing, and are being collected now. Day of registration and raffle pick-up begin at 10 a.m., with a group welcome and raffle drawings beginning at 10:30 a.m. before we head out on the Rail Trail. All proceeds from tax-deductible donations will benefit BAP.

Sponsorship opportunities (including prize donations) have been created for the event by BAP in cooperation with the BVRA. For sponsorship information, call or email Jonathan Walls, Bicycles Against Poverty sponsorship chair, at (570) 854-7091,
