Local students showcase creativity at regional computer fairs

MILTON — Individuals and teams of students from nine school districts within the Central Susquehanna Intermediate Unit (CSIU) five-county area excelled at the Pennsylvania Regional Middle School and High School Computer Fairs.

More than 100 students displayed skills in six different categories: computer fair logo; digital movie; graphic design; web page design; programming; and animation.

Midd-West High School seniors Aaron Shockey, Jake Keister, Marshall Dupuy and Hannah Jordan submitted projects for the computer fair. Shockey, Keister and Dupuy created a digital movie, “Gym Class Heroes,” and Jordan developed a movie about seatbelt statistics.

Sixteen judges with expertise in each category determined the winners. Projects were judged on a clear understanding of the use of design tools and principles. All entries were provided with feedback, and first-place winners have the opportunity to incorporate judges’ suggestions into their projects before moving on to the next round.

Jeffrey Seebold of Contrast Communications and Kurt Ilgen who works in the print shop at the United States Penitentiary Lewisburg were first-time judges at the competition.

The Pennsylvania Regional Middle School and High School Computer Fairs are held annually to highlight students’ application skills and computer knowledge. Students are able to unleash their creativity, and convey information more dynamically to enhance the learning process.

First-place winners in each category will advance to the state competition at Dickinson College in May.
