Flag Retirement Ceremony

— NORTHUMBERLAND — American Legion Post 44 in Northumberland will hold its annual flag retirement service at 7 p.m. Saturday, June 14 at the post, located along Route 11 (next to the Surplus Outlet).

When American flags are deemed unsuitable for further display, they are inspected and retired in a formal ceremony. Upon retirement, they are burned, so that no one displays them again. This is the proper method of disposing of American flags as recommended by the U.S. Flag Code. American flags should never be thrown away.

In addition to the officers of Post 44, members of the Sons of the American Legion and the Boy Scouts will be participating in the flag retirement service.

For more information, contact Dick Simpson, Past Commander of Post 44, at (570) 847-1974.
