A step back in time at Rural Heritage Day on July 12

— LEWISBURG — The Union County Historical Society will host Rural Heritage Day on Saturday, July 12, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Dale/Engle/Walker House, 1471 Strawbridge Road, Lewisburg.

Children and adults are invited to enjoy a step back in time at this celebration of our rural traditions and heritage. Day-long demonstrations include split-oak basket-making, tinsmithing, wheelwrighting, windsor chair construction, knitting socks on an antique machine, wooden rake-making, PA German flax culture, 18th-century coffee brewing, butter-making, antique farm machinery and tools, traditional Pennsylvania German design and fraktur art, and more.  

Children’s activities include old-time games, farm animals for petting, pony and pony cart rides, and an activity table for making corn husk dolls and practicing fraktur art.

Scheduled events include tours of house exterior and hearth at 12:15, 1:45, 3:45 and 5:15 p.m.; children’s potato harvest  at 2:30 p.m.; and antique field machinery demonstrations at 11 a.m., 1, 2:30 and 4 p.m.

Dale’s Ridge Ramblers will offer old-time country music at 11 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.; Any Jig Will Do will provide traditional Celtic music on hammered dulcimer, flute and guitar at 2 p.m. and Joyful Noise will present traditional hymns on mountain dulcimers at 4 p.m.

Hamburgers, hot dogs, barbecued chicken dinners, homemade ice cream and beverages will be for sale. Admission is $5 per vehicle.
