Annual Cookoff & Auction Features Variety

— MIFFLINBURG — The Pennsylvania Cystic Fibrosis, Inc. (PACFI) Annual Chili Cookoff & Auction, sponsored by Budweiser, will be held at the Scarlet D Hotel in Mifflinburg on Saturday, Feb. 22, beginning at 1 p.m. The annual event consists of chili chefs vying for awards and an auction of over 100 items including a painting from Jody Fallon, work from other local artists, gift certificates, sports memorabilia, clothing items, and a wide variety of wine and beer signs, mirrors, and glassware.

“I want to donate some items in memory of John and Charity,” said Dave Wagner of NEPA Glass Etching in Scranton. Wagner’s son, John, was four months old when he died in 1978 due to cystic fibrosis (CF), and his daughter Charity was eight years old when she died in 1987, also due to CF. Wagner is donating two football-shaped Philadelphia Eagles glasses along with a pair of Seattle Seahawks Superbowl Champions glasses; two Harley Davidson mugs; a pair of Penn State coffee mugs; and a three piece Live, Love, Laugh candle set.

Also featured will be several of the Boyds by Enesco 2014 Collector’s Edition of Burke P. Bear, named after Mifflinburg teenager Burke P. Derr who died due to CF in 1997. The special bear will be signed by Bob Derr, Burke’s dad, and Derr will also have copies of his book, “Burke’s Tour,” available.

Clint Rockey, of Rockey Auctions in Lewisburg, will again auction off all the items. Visa, MasterCard, and Discover can be used to pay for auctioned items.

Chili chefs pay a $12 entry fee and bring their crockpots of chili to the Scarlet D by 11:30 a.m. on Feb. 22. Chili should be preheated and a list of ingredients must accompany each entry. There are two categories, “hot” and “other,” and entries are based on taste, originality, and consistency. Each category is worth 10 points and presentation is worth two points. Each chef will have a two foot square space to display their entry. Chefs can call (570) 966-5400 for more information or questions.

All proceeds benefit PACFI, an independent, nonprofit, all volunteer 501(c)(3) organization that provides supports and services for Pennsylvania citizens affected by cystic fibrosis (CF) and funds some of the nation’s best CF research.
