UUCSV Celebrates Joseph Priestley’s Birthday on Sunday, March 9

— NORTHUMBERLAND — On Sunday, March 9, at 10:30 a.m., Unitarian Universalists of the Susquehanna Valley (UUCSV) will celebrate the birthday of Rev. Dr. Joseph Priestley, born March 13, 1733. Priestley fled England in 1794 seeking political and religious freedom in America. He settled in Northumberland, with his wife and three sons. In his home, Priestley conducted Unitarian services for other families from England and local residents. Descendents of Priestley and members of the Unitarian congregation constructed the Priestley Chapel in Northumberland in 1834.

This year a special feature of the annual service will be the welcoming of two quests, Ron Brandt and Alan Bunner. Both are members of Mount Vernon Unitarian Church near Alexandria, Va. They will recreate a program they presented last year to their home congregation in which Ron Brandt discusses Priestley’s life and then conducts an interview with Joseph Priestley, portrayed by Alan Bunner. Brandt was formerly executive editor of publications for a professional education association, ASCD. Bunner has a PhD in physics, and before retirement, was a NASA official. Both men love to sing and have been active in the church choir for over 20 years along with serving on the board and committees. They also sing in other groups, Bunner in a community chorus and Brandt in a men’s barbershop chorus.

Following the service, all are invited to stay and enjoy a time of visiting and participating in a pot luck meal.

UUCSV is located at 265 Point Township Drive, (Route 11 N.) Northumberland. Additional information is available by calling (570) 473-9331 or visit
