Second Grade Gets a Lesson on Diversity

— TREVORTON — Second graders at Line Mountain Elementary School had two visits from Janet Allis in September.  Janet spoke to the students on the topic of diversity. In her first lesson she discussed feelings and friendship. These are needs we all have. She had the students look at different types of potatoes and spoke about how different they look on the outside but they are the same on the inside, just like people.

Her second visit was about physical challenges that some people have and how to assist those individuals. She provided demonstrations about blindness, deafness and physical challenges. Students examined braille cards and temporarily became blind to experience how visually impaired people need to use their other senses to get around.  Students learned how people that are hearing impaired communicate and receive information.  Allis also spoke about physical challenges and provided an activity to show how difficult it may be to live with arthritis.

The Line Mountain PTO paid for these lessons.
