From Cinderella to Princess Di

— LEWISBURG — The Union County Historical Society will present the program “From Cinderella to Princess Di: Making Meaning in American Weddings” by Dr. Deborah A. Abowitz on Sunday March 23, from 2:30 to 4 p.m., at the Gallery Theatre, in the Langone Center at Bucknell University, Lewisburg.

Dr. Abowitz, professor of sociology at Bucknell University, will present an overview of some changing ideas about pre-nuptial and nuptial (wedding) rituals in American life and culture over the past century. Many wedding-related “traditions” are in fact fairly new; they are social creations of a 20th century wedding “industry” that tied consumption to romantic love. From the diamond engagement ring to the “white” dress, many of our wedding-related rituals are not the age-old traditions we believe.

Photos of local weddings taken by photographer Don Ross in the 1940s through 1960s — duplicates of those in the historical society’s collection — will be on display at the program. Family and friends who would like to have family photographs may take them on a first come, first served basis.

The program will be held in the Gallery Theatre, Room 301, third floor in the Langone Center at Bucknell University. The Langone Center is at the corner of Moore Avenue and South Seventh Street, Lewisburg. Parking is available along Moore Avenue, and in the lot across the street.

This program is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be provided.
