Pet Food Donations Needed for Arthur’s Pet Pantry

— MIFFLINBURG — Everyone loves their cats or dogs but it is not always easy in this difficult economic time to care for them. They are our friends and our companions and for some people their pet may be the  only companion they have. Budgets are tight and becoming tighter and it is becoming quite common for families to have to give their beloved pet up because they can no longer provide food for them from their budgets, especially the elderly, disabled and others on fixed incomes. It can come down to a choice for some of buying food, purchasing medicine, paying for heat or — feeding their pet. Arthur’s Pet Pantry tries to help people and families who are struggling to keep their beloved animals by providing them with dog and cat food.

To demonstrate how prevalent the situation is becoming, the site where the food is distributed once per month is usually open to eligible people and families for three hours. In November, the volunteers had on hand twice the amount of pet food that they had in October but the demand was so great that the food was exhausted within the first hour. In November alone, they helped 44 families care for 117 cats and 62 dogs. In the last five months alone, they have distributed more 50 percent of the total amount that had been distributed in the previous three years. Pet owners are fully screened for income qualifications prior to the distribution of any pet food.

Please consider how important your cat or dog is to you or your friends, family, children, grandchildren and then donate food to help others feed their pets. Both wet and dry dog food and cat food are needed and especially cat food is in demand in addition to a need for cat litter. Donations can be dropped off in containers at Country Farm & Home on Route 45 in Mifflinburg (container is outside under a table of greens), Carriage Corner in Mifflinburg and outside the Mifflinburg Heritage & Revitalization Association office (inside the fenced yard) at 300 Chestnut St. in Mifflinburg.
