SUN Tech Students Take Top Honors at AWS Competition

NEW BERLIN — Robert Girvin, James Fetterolf, Andrew Martin, Dalton Brown, and Joshua Moore are students enrolled in the welding program at SUN Area Technical Institute. In early March, they competed in a welding competition sponsored by the American Welding Society (AWS) held at Pennsylvania College of Technology. The schools involved in the welding competition were Columbia Montour Vo-Tech, Williamsport High School, and SUN Area Technical Institute.    

On April 24, Penn College held a welding banquet to present the awards. The students got the opportunity to meet the current AWS president, Nancy Cole, who was the guest speaker for the event.  

Robert Girvin took first place and received a Lincoln Electric MIG welder and Miller welding apparel. He is the son of Robert Jr. and Robin Girvin, of Mifflinburg.

James Fetterolf took second place and received an ESAB welder and welding apparel. James is the son of Mark and Jackie Fetterolf, of Beavertown.

Third place went to Andrew Martin. He received a Miller auto-darkening welding helmet, welding table, and welding apparel. Andrew is the son of Lavern and Kristie Martin, of Mifflinburg.

Dalton Brown finished in fifth place. He also took home an auto-darkening welding helmet, 4½-inch hand grinder, and welding apparel. Dalton is the son of Gary and Tara Renner, of Middleburg.  

Joshua Moore took sixth place and brought home an auto darkening welding helmet and welding apparel. Joshua is the son of William and Melanie Moore, of Sunbury. In addition to the prizes, all of the place winners received plaques with their names and placing.
